Photosynthesis and cellular respiration are the fundamental processes in the flow of energy and the cycling of matter. Students are given the task of building models of water and carbon dioxide molecules, which are converted into glucose and oxygen molecules at the giant chloroplast.  The glucose and oxygen molecules then move to the mitochondria where the students reassemble them into carbon dioxide and water molecules, generating ATP.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Picture

The plant cell and magnified chloroplast are shown above with the reactants for photosynthesis, 6 carbon dioxide molecules and 6 water molecules.

Students "break" the chemical bonds and reassemble the atoms to form the products of cellular respiration, carbon dioxide and water molecules.

CELLULAR RESPIRATION

Picture

Both animal and plant cells are shown with a magnified mitochondria and the reactants for cellular respiration, 1 glucose and 6 oxygen molecules.
